Microsoft Submerges Data Center in Ocean

Microsoft has submerged an entire data center 100 ft (30 metre) below the surface of the ocean near the Orkney Islands in Scotland. It is powered by wind, solar, and tidal sources, and will be kept cool by using ocean water as a heat sink. The Project Natick data center is made up of 864 servers in a 40 ft (12 metre) container that sits about 22  m (14 miles) from the coast. The project, the second phase of a pilot, will last for 12 months.
