Danfoss Manufacturing Facility Gets Platinum Rating
09 June 2016

The Rs. 500 crore Danfoss India campus, spread across 50 acres at Oragadam, Chennai is an IGBC Platinum Rated sustainable R&D cum manufacturing facility that replicates the zero waste environment of the Danfoss Global facility in Denmark. The focus of the Oragadam facility is to design and innovate products for climate and energy for both Indian and export markets. Danfoss has made India a manufacturing cum export hub for its regional subsidiaries. It sources products from local suppliers, creating ancillary jobs. The in-house 1MW solar park is designed to generate 1.5 million units per annum. Some of the key features of the campus include energy efficient structural glazing, re-use of construction waste generated, use of recycled material as much as possible, insulated roofs to minimize heat ingress, roofs with natural lighting and a 2x500 sqm courtyard inside the administrative building. The campus houses facilities for research and development, skill development and product development along with a
customer application development centre and testing labs, with a focus on innovation for customized solutions. The product development centres
and customer application development centre support improved energy efficiency applications in cold chain infrastructure. The customer application development centre includes a psychrometric laboratory.

Skill Development on the Campus
Danfoss foresees growth opportunities in the cooling sector in India and has identified skill gaps in the industry. Skill Development Programs such as the Danfoss Learning Centre within the campus facilitate knowledge transfer about refrigeration and air conditioning and commercial compressor
products, applications, technologies and services to customers and industry stakeholders. The Ammonia Training Unit, which is an operational demonstration and training system, helps improve awareness about ammonia as a feasible low GWP refrigerant and train stakeholders in its application. The Cold Room Simulator is installed using a wide range of Danfoss line components and controls. The simulator, which runs on either a fixed speed or a variable speed compressor, helps in understanding the benefits of a variable speed compressor over a fixed speed compressor.
Learners can also witness the real time performance and efficiency of a thermostatic expansion valve vs an electronic expansion valve. Multiple pressure regulator combinations have been used to simulate different application environments. The system is monitored using a Danfoss electronic controller with the help of pressure and temperature sensors mounted at various locations in the unit. There is a Live Chiller module of 5TR capacity running on the alternate refrigerant R410A, which can be operated using a water cooled condenser or an air cooled condenser. Both of these can function with either a thermostatic expansion valve or an electronic expansion valve and can be automated using the electronic controller. Learners can choose the combinations and see how the entire system behaves with different components in different settings. There is an Ammonia Refrigeration System with a pump separator and hot gas defrosting arrangement. It has three modes of operation (manual, semi-automatic and
fully automatic), with Ammonia industrial refrigeration valves and controls. The unit caters to four different cooling applications with operating temperature ranging from -35°C to +14°C:
i. Cold store or blast freezer with temperature range from -25°C to -35°C.
ii. Cold room with temperature range from -10°C to +10°C.
iii. Flake ice machine with temperature of -29°C.
iv. Room air conditioner with temperature range from +14°C to +24°C.
There is a dedicated space with cut sections of various products such as compressors, Freon controls and ammonia valves. Here, the learners can touch and feel the products and witness their working. The learning centre caters to OEMs, wholesalers, contractors, consultants, installers and end users. The programs are led by Danfoss Certified Instructors.
