Asia’s
largest Green Building conference and exhibition, the CII-IGBC Green
Building Congress, is held in different parts of the country every
year. The 11th edition of the Green Building Congress, held on 24-26
October 2013 at Chennai, evoked excellent response. This year, the
event focused on Futuristic
Green Habitats & Technologies.
The

Inaugural
Session Dr.
K. Rosaiah, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, was the Chief Guest at the
inaugural session. In his address, he said that `Green’ should
reach every nook and corner of the country and every construction
should be designed in an eco-friendly way. The next 10 years will be
the decade of integrated sustainable built structures with the advent
of large integrated townships, satellite cities, gated communities,
and campuses with multiple buildings. Jamshyd N. Godrej, Chairman,
CII – Godrej GBC, said the most important aspect of the Green
Building movement in India is that it is a part of the larger agenda
of sustainability. Dr. Prem C. Jain, Chairman, IGBC mentioned that
India has over 2,235 IGBC registered green building projects,
amounting to over 1.65 billion sq ft of green building footprint,
making India one of the top three countries in the world. B.
Santhanam, Chairman, CII Southern Region, said climate change has
impacted all countries and Indian industry is committed to mitigate
the environmental impacts. N. K. Ranganath, Chairman, 2013 Conference
Committee, said that it will be a huge challenge to manage our
resources, and environmental degradation would be irreversible if we
do not act now.
The
International Exhibition
Dr.
K. Rosaiah inaugurated the three-day international exhibition, in
which over a hundred latest and emerging green building technologies
and green products were displayed.
Awards
for School Children and Architectural Students
Dr.
K. Rosaiah presented awards to the winners of Green-I Contest 2013 -
Lavish Bansal and Sanan Goyal from The Millennium School, Mohali; and
to the winners of IGBC Green Design Competition 2013 - Minakshi
Mohanta and Amit Joseph Kurien from the School of Planning &
Architecture, New Delhi.
IGBC
Hall of Fame Awards 2013
Dr.
K. Rosaiah presented the IGBC Hall of Fame Awards 2013 to Dr. Kath
Williams, past Vice-Chair, US Green Building Council and Past
President, WorldGBC; R. Parasuraman, Founding Chairman, IGBC and
Immediate Past Board Member, WorldGBC; and S. Padmanaban, former
Senior Advisor, USAID.
MoU
with Building and Construction Authority, Singapore
An
MoU was inked with Building and Construction Authority (BCA),
Singapore. It aims at continuous exchange of best practices,
promoting business opportunities, organizing Business Missions and
partnering at major events between the two countries.
Panel
Discussion
A
panel discussion on The
Future Habitats – How can we proactively make them greener was
organised where experts shared their thoughts and perspectives on the
topic.
Felicitation
of IGBC Rated Green Building Projects
Vikram
Kapur, Principal Secretary and Commissioner, Corporation of Chennai
felicitated 90 green building projects for 2012-13 with plaques and
certificates at an award distribution programme on 24 October 2013.
Conference
on Green Homes, Existing Buildings, Green Interiors and Green
Hospitals
Speaking
at the inaugural session, Arun Kumar Misra, Secretary, Central
Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation mentioned that in
the coming four years, over one million houses would be constructed
by the government in different blocks and municipalities. All these
would go the Green way by design at the construction stage. The
inaugural session was also marked by the release of IGBC Green Homes
Detailed Reference Guide, which contains case studies from Green
Homes and can assist project teams in understanding the detailed
calculations.
Advanced
Training Programme on Green Buildings
A
two-day advanced training programme was organized to impart knowledge
on Green Building concepts and IGBC’s LEED 2011 for India Rating
System, and to share best practices in Green Buildings
Green
Building Mission
The
Mission was organized at TRIL Info Park, Ramanujan IT City and TCS
Campus Siruseri at Chennai. The Mission provided an opportunity to
the delegates to gain first hand understanding of various aspects of
design, construction and operation of green buildings.
